An Introduction to Particles

You might be amazed by the number of different particles borne in the air that we breath.

Generally speaking, the air in the atmosphere and the air within our homes and within other closed environments consists of many different kinds of particle.

A particle is a tiny portion of matter, for example, particles are commonly measured in microns also known as micrometers, and a micrometer’s length is one millionth of a meter.  So particles are incredibly tiny and at their size they are mostly unnoticed by the human eye.

If you wave your hand through the air as though a fan, you can feel a resistance and something that you are unable to see.  It is the air’s particles that you are feeling as they resist your hand’s movement.

Bacillus [a harmless saprophyte (it feeds on dead and decomposing materials), can cause food poisoning, illness or infection] and

Pseudomonas [known to be an opportunistic pathogen because it only targets individuals whose immune systems are already compromised – but not healthy individuals].

VOCs – these are Volatile Organic Compounds and they have a high vapour pressure at room temperature so that they easily become vapours or gases.  Thousands of VOCs are within products are used within the home (paint, fabric, cleaning solutions, etc.) some have an odour while others are odourless.  Some are biologically created by plants and by molds.  Many VOCs have been linked to health problems and have been found to be 0.1 microns in diameter.

PM 2.5 – PM 2.5 is a reference to atmospheric particulate matter that has a diameter of 2.5 microns or less.  Fine particles of this kind can originate from various sources: agricultural burning, airplanes, dust storms, forest fires, motor vehicles, power plants, residential wood burning and volcanic eruptions.  While these are emitted directly into the air from some sources, they are also formed when gases and particles react with one another in the atmosphere.  The effects on health in humans following the inhalation of particulate matter include asthma, lung cancer and premature death.  Particulate matter pollution has been estimated to have caused thousands of deaths per year in the United States and in Europe also.  Particulate matter is the reason why the US Environmental Protection Agency set standards for PM-10 and PM-2.5 concentrations in urban air and offers the public data for checking air quality to notice.
